You got your KCSE results and they were not what you hoped for. A D+ or D grade can feel like a door closing — university is out of reach, family is disappointed, and you are not sure what comes next.
Here is what nobody tells you: some of Kenya's most successful creative professionals started exactly where you are now. A KCSE grade measures how well you memorised a curriculum — it does not measure your creativity, your work ethic, or your potential. The creative industries care about what you can do, not what grade you got.
This guide is specifically for students who scored D+ to D in KCSE. It covers real options that accept your grade, teach you marketable skills, and lead to actual careers.
Why Your KCSE Grade Does Not Define Your Future
Creative industries hire on skill, not grades — no employer in design, film, music, or content creation will ask for your KCSE certificate. They want to see your work
Certificate courses accept D+ and above — foundation programmes at accredited institutions are specifically designed for students who did not meet diploma or university cut-offs
Certificates lead to diplomas — completing a 6-month certificate can qualify you for an 18-month diploma, even if your KCSE grade was below C-. It is a stepping stone, not a dead end
6 months is all it takes — in half a year, you can have a new skill, a portfolio, and the start of a career. Compare that to sitting at home waiting for "something to come up"
Many successful creatives in Kenya — photographers, designers, producers, filmmakers — started with certificates after low KCSE scores
We need to address the elephant in the room. In Kenya, there's enormous pressure to go to university. Parents want it. Society expects it. And a D+ in KCSE feels like a door slamming shut.
But here's what nobody tells you: ADMI's founder, Wilfred Kiumi, grew up in a slum. He worked in a barbershop to pay for his education. He couldn't afford university. And then he built a school that the BBC profiled, that Harvard Business School partnered with, that Microsoft chose for its AppFactory, and whose graduates worked on an Oscar-nominated film. Your KCSE grade is not your story — it's just the first page.
"Parents always ask me if their child will be successful," Wilfred told the BBC. "My mum was the same — she didn't understand why I wanted to make films when I could do accounting instead." Today, ADMI has trained over 3,000 creatives. The answer to those parents' question is yes — but it requires the right training, not the right exam score.

The Pathway: Certificate → Diploma → Career
This is the most important thing to understand: a certificate is a stepping stone, not a destination.
Here is how it works at ADMI:
Foundation Certificate (6 months) — entry requirement: D+ in KCSE. Learn the basics, build initial skills, discover what you love
Diploma (18 months) — entry requirement: C- in KCSE, OR completed certificate. If your KCSE was D+, the certificate qualifies you for the diploma
Career — graduate with EU-accredited credentials (ECTS credits through Woolf University), a professional portfolio, and industry connections
This means a student who scored D+ in KCSE can, within 2 years, hold an EU-accredited diploma that is recognised internationally. The KCSE grade was just the starting point — not the ceiling.
What Your Parents Need to Know
If your parents are sceptical about creative courses, share these facts:
Kenya's creative economy is growing at over 10% per year — faster than most traditional sectors
Graphic designers, filmmakers, and digital marketers earn competitive salaries — KES 50,000-200,000+ per month with experience
ADMI's programmes are accredited by TVETA (Kenya) and Woolf University (EU) — these are legitimate qualifications, not informal training
Certificate graduates can progress to internationally accredited diplomas
Unemployment among trained creative professionals is significantly lower than among general university graduates — because the skills are immediately marketable
Many parents of ADMI students initially had doubts but are now proud of their children's success in creative careers
Frequently Asked Questions
I got a D plain (not D+). Can I still enrol?
Contact ADMI admissions to discuss your specific situation. Some foundation programmes may accept D plain on a case-by-case basis, particularly if you can demonstrate strong creative interest and motivation.
How much does it cost?
Certificate fees are significantly lower than university or diploma fees. ADMI offers flexible payment plans. Request a prospectus for specific fee structures.
Will a certificate get me a job?
In creative industries, your portfolio matters more than your qualifications. A certificate with a strong body of work will get you hired. And if you progress to the diploma, you get EU-accredited credentials that further strengthen your profile.
What if I change my mind about my specialisation?
The 6-month certificate is a low-risk way to explore. If you start with photography but discover you love video, you can progress to the Film & TV diploma. The certificate helps you find your direction.

From Nairobi Slums to the Oscars
ADMI's founder, Wilfred Kiumi, grew up in a Nairobi slum. He worked in a barbershop to fund his education. Today, ADMI graduates have been part of an Oscar-nominated film. As BBC reported, eight ADMI graduates worked on Watu Wote, nominated for Best Short Live Action Film at the Academy Awards. Your starting point does not determine your destination.
Cannot afford fees? ADMI is the only vocational school chosen alongside universities for the Netflix Creative Equity Scholarship Fund — fully funded scholarships that cover tuition, accommodation, and living costs. The Ganjisha programme with Google.org also provides free content creation training across all 47 counties. Financial barriers should not stop you.
