S2E2: Understanding Sound Capture - An ADMI Masterclass ft Hendrick Sam
The session, led by Hendrick Sam, begins with an analogy comparing sound capturing to photography, where the quality of the device matters. Just as a high-end phone produces sharper images than a low-quality one, the type of microphone used has a huge impact on sound quality. Hendrick introduces the idea that capturing sound isn’t just about having a good system but also about the science of microphones, environments, and how sound interacts with them. He explains a chronological framework for sound engineering: first, producing sound (like singing, clapping, or playing instruments), second, how that sound travels through air or materials, and third, where it ends up, whether in someone’s ear or in a microphone. Using examples of echo in empty rooms, carpeting, and egg trays for DIY soundproofing, Hendrick shows how the capture process is about controlling the environment to minimize unwanted noise and echoes so that the microphone records the clearest sound possible. Finally, Hendrick breaks sound engineering into three stages: capturing, manipulating, and playing back. Capturing focuses on the physical environment and the microphone choice (dynamic vs condenser). Manipulation, which comes after capture, is where the sound is shaped and adjusted before playback. The emphasis throughout is that every step matters—from the room setup to the microphone used—because they all contribute to how well the sound is ultimately heard. Watch, learn, and get inspired. This is not just school. This is ADMI.
